Baby Step Journal : Month 1

Motor Skills : Month 1

Gross Motor Skills
Your baby has developed greater muscle strength and consequently her reflexive behavior will lessen. She will begin to move her arms and legs voluntarily, stretching out her body from the fetal position. She can hold his head up for several minutes when lying on his tummy and on her back. When she is sitting she keeps her head in line with his back, but it will still bob back and forth slightly so you need to continue to support her head. Your baby follows objects with her eyes and will stare at attractive large objects as she begins to see color. She will still find it difficult to see small objects.

Fine Motor Skills
Your baby's grasp reflex reduces as she becomes aware of her hands and fingers she will reach out for objects using more controlled actions. Objects are likely to end up in her mouth because the sucking reflex is still very strong and taste is an important sense for newborn babies.

Language : Month 1

Your baby will begin to vocalize a greater range of sounds but his primary form of communication will still be crying. She recognizes and responds to your voice using small throaty sounds, coos and giggles, and may even move her body in unison with making these sounds. Because her eyesight is improving she can anticipate the sound you will make by looking at the shape of your mouth. Make sure your baby can see your face when you talk to her, and use exaggerated facial movements so she learns how to form sounds and words.

Emotion : Month 1

Your baby will show emotions like delight, distress, and excitement. She will move her body when she becomes excited and will become quiet when you hold her. She is also learning to quiet herself by sucking on her fingers or objects. Your baby will smile at you when she sees you from a distance, both as a form of recognition and as a display of emotion. She remembers activities that make her feel loved and will eagerly anticipate events like bath time and feeding. She will spend more time awake and stays awake longer if stimulated by people. She responds well to routine and will begin to sleep and eat at more regular intervals.

What Your Baby Enjoys : Month 1

Visual Stimulation
Your child's eyesight is developing and her range of vision increases. She loves to look at faces and moving objects especially those with sound effects. Use bright colors and play with your child by making the objects move and interact with her while you talk. Look at your child when you talk to her and show emotions through the tone of your voice and your facial expressions.

Physical Stimulation
Your baby is becoming aware of her body and loves the feeling of being touched and held. Move your baby's arms and legs gently and continue to massage her as you did in the first month. You can touch each part of your child's body while telling her its name. Show her the motion of her arms and legs so he learns how the different parts of her body move. Give your child small toys and encourage her to grasp them by bending her fingers around the objects.

How Can You Help : Month 1

  • Play a range of music to your child and sing to her.
  • Have your child stand and hold her while her legs take her own weight for a second.
  • Place objects close by so she has to move her head to see them.
  • Move objects within reach to encourage your child to reach out and grab hold of them.
  • Place toys in his crib that he can kick out at.
  • Play peek-a-boo.
  • Encourage your child to follow objects with her eyes and body by moving them slowly around the room.
  • Stroke your baby gently with different textures and materials such as feathers, tissue paper and cloth to show her how things feel.
  • Introduce her to new smells – her sense of smell is highly developed and she will enjoy the variety.
  • Set aside regular time for cuddles and closeness to make your baby feel loved and secure.
