Baby Step Journal : Month 14

Motor Skills : Month 14

Gross Motor Skills
Your baby is constantly active, walking, crawling, starting, stopping, sitting and climbing. She can walk sideways for several steps and has increased her walking speed, introducing a “run-walk” to her range of movement. She will pick up an object while standing and then throw it away. She climbs up and down sofas, tables, and chairs.
Fine Motor Skills
She is more refined in her movements and can place small items in slightly larger objects, such as a button into a bottle. Her fingers can grasp small handles and hinges and she works out how to open them. She likes to carry separate items in each hand and prefers to keep them both rather than giving one of the objects up for the other. She uses her fingers to explore and her sense of touch is more developed.

Language : Month 14
She recognizes the names of major body parts and may even be able to point at one without help. She uses words, jargon and gestures to communicate, but will still point to objects that she wants. She is excited by animals and may say the noise they make
rather than their name, such as “moo” for cow, and “whoof” for dog.
She understands and responds to several commands and a few key words and phrases.

Emotion : Month 14
She understands and responds to several commands and a few key words and phrases.
She has developed a temper but is easily distracted and will quickly forget what was upsetting her. She continues to demand attention and assert herself, but is learning the concept of compromise and not having her own way all the time.

Learning : Month 14
She will attempt to copy strokes and outlines when she draws, and will spontaneously write and scribble. She recognizes and pats pictures, and loves hearing stories.
She is interested in strange textures and unusual sensations such as stickiness, roughness and gooeyness. She can place pegs in a pegboard with assistance and can remove them. She will happily copy your laugh, sneeze, cough, and other noises you make.

What Your Baby Enjoys : Month 14
Her coordination is improving when she throws a ball or places an item within another object. She enjoys bath time and being around water, so you need to watch her as she can move very quickly.
She enjoys experimenting and using toys and objects in unconventional ways. She will create her own games and movements for objects. She likes toys that look like real objects such as horses, dogs, and farm animals.

How Can You Help : Month 14
  • Give her games and objects that require fine motor skills such as smaller household items and activity sets that let her manipulate the pieces.
  • Let her touch different surfaces and substances and explain to her what they are.
  • Ask her for hugs and cuddles.
  • Continue to introduce new commands for her to follow.
  • Don’t reprimand her if she throws her toys - she is not always doing it out of anger, to her it’s a game.
  • Show her that there is an appropriate time for actions and activities, for example climbing out of her crib when its bedtime is not acceptable.
  • Get her to chase you to encourage her to walk and run.
  • Throw her balls of different sizes and weights so she learns to adjust when catching and throwing them back.
